Fall Foliage Quabbin Reservoir Tour & Atkins Farm Country Market
Location: Newport, RI Price: $95.00
Date(s): 10/10/2023 Time:
Tuesday, October 10, 2023

Begin the day with a 1-hour Guided Tour that delves into the intriguing history of how and why the Quabbin Reservoir was built during the Depression Era. Four of the towns in the Swift River Valley were flooded to create a drinking supply for Boston and surrounding towns. It was a controversial move at the time, but it gave people struggling to find work a government-funded job. Though the project uprooted many families and homes, the end result is a majestic, pristine, protected area for wildlife, and a park for people to enjoy, in addition to being Boston’s water supply.

Then enjoy lunch at The Salem Cross Inn. Begin with a Garden Salad with Chef’s Homemade Dressing. For your entrée choose between the Old Fashioned Chicken Pie served on a Buttermilk Biscuit or Fresh Baked Haddock. Both entrées include vegetable, potato, homemade rolls & muffins, tea, coffee & dessert.

We will end the day at Atkins Farm Country Market, both a popular and modern, specialty food retail store of today combined with an old fashioned country market of yesteryear.

Newport Mansions At Christmas Time
Location: Newport, RI Price: $131.00
Date(s): 12/03/2023 Time:
Sunday, December 3, 2023

Begin the day at The Breakers Mansion; a 70-room mansion that has approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of living space. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America.

Then to the Brick Alley Pub for lunch. Choose between the Baked Lobster Mac N’ Cheese, Chicken Parmigiana, Forever Braised Boneless Short Ribs, Simply Baked New England Cod, Brick Alley Lobster Salad Roll or Penne al Pomodoro. Your meal includes their Soup, Salad & Bread Buffet or pick between their Clam Chowder or Lobster Bisque. Also includes iced tea, soda, coffee or lemonade & dessert.

Then meet back and take Newport's Ten Mile Drive that combines that history of a wealthy summer community with a fabulous Newport recreational treasure of public parks and miles of public access shoreline to rank as one of the most popular "drives" in the country. The "Drive" is way more than what you can see in a short and hurried 35-minute bus trip over the route. Many of the home owners seek a quiet summer and have gone to great lengths to insure their tranquil settings. Closed gates are very common and trees are strategically allowed to grow in ways that enhance resident privacy.

End the day at the Marble House, designed as a summer cottage for Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt by the society architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was unparalleled in opulence for an American house when it was completed in 1892. Its temple-front portico, which also serves as a porte-cochère, resembles that of the White House. It was a social landmark that helped spark the transformation of Newport from a relatively relaxed summer colony of wooden houses to the now legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. The 50-room mansion required a staff of 36 servants, including butlers, maids, coachmen, and footmen.
